Denison Public Library Programs & Services

How long has it been since you were in the Library? In case you don’t know, the Denison Public Library is not just a place to go read a book. It is also about technology and learning. It is a research center and a teaching center. There are opportunities to interface with other people, to connect to the Internet, and to do homework. It is also a community meeting place. We are open seven days a week.

The Library is a service-oriented institution that is as user-oriented and as user-friendly as we can possibly make it. What is unique about the products and services of the library? We have over 90,000 books, audio-visual materials, movies, magazines, newspapers, and microfilm from which to choose; and computers to work on and connect to the Internet. Rental of overhead projectors, slide projectors and screens are also available. Being a member of the Library gains you access to all of these things.

The Library offers free use of computers for students, senior citizens and business people. Students who may not have access to a computer at home can do their homework and gain access to the Internet for extensive research for their projects. They, too, can utilize “TexShare” for research for school papers with “EBSCO Homework”, “Student Resource Center”, “Searchasaurus” and many other education programs available.

Are you computer proficient? Even if you regularly access the internet, the Library can give you a little more. You can connect to the internet in a very special way by using our “TexShare” data system to go even deeper into the web than you can on your own. By being a member of the Library, you get free membership-only access to the “TexShare” techno-library which includes much of the information in the Texas State Library system. You also get access to several programs that are only accessible for a fee on the Internet.  And, even better, when you become a member of the Library, we will give you a password that will allow you to access “TexShare” from your home or office. So, business people, you can do more in-depth research using “TexShare” from your desk.

There are many other programs available for children. We have interactive story sessions for children with special programs for day care centers. Each summer there are many fun and educational activities for kids.

Genealogy researchers have long been using the library for developing their family tree. You will find archives in “Biography & Genealogy Master Index”, “HeritageQuest” and many others, free of charge with your Library card.

We have a great conference room for meetings by groups of up to 50 people at no charge if you are an individual or non-profit organization with a library card. Audio-visual equipment is available for any special presentations you may want to make. Call the library to make reservations.

Some other services offered at the Library are proctoring, lamination, notarizing, faxing, photocopying, and from time to time, computer classes to help patrons who are not familiar with computers.

A library card is very easy to get. Simply go to the library, fill out an application, show proof of where you live and one of our friendly staff will immediately give you a card. If you happen to live outside the city of Denison, you will be asked to pay a nominal usage fee for the privilege of using the library, less than 77 cents per week. Of course, all DISD students and their families who live outside the city are exempt from this fee. An additional benefit is that your Denison Library BARR card (the library card) will give you free access to the Sherman Public Library and the Grayson County College Library.  Even if you decide not to become a member, you can still come and enjoy reading from our extensive collection. We think you will be pleased with everything the Denison Public Library has to offer.
