Registration

Any resident of the state of Texas may make application for a library card. A card is issued for a one year period of time, and is renewable. Once the applicant becomes 18, he/she will need to complete a new application card, and update it to adult status. There is no charge for this service.

Out of state residents may obtain a borrower's card for $40.00 per year.

The citizen must present photo identification and proof of current address.

Pager numbers will not be accepted as a home phone number.  Patrons must have a working phone in order to receive interlibrary loans or to rent audio/visual media.

A parent or guardian must make application for a person under 18 years of age. The parent must show us their driver's license. Parents must pay outstanding charges on their card and return all overdue items before obtaining cards for their children.

Replacement cards cannot be issued until any outstanding charges are paid to all BARR libraries.

General Circulation

A patron must present his/her library card or other valid ID to check out materials or equipment, and submit interlibrary loan and courier requests. Card or Social Security number must be used when renewing by phone.

The purpose of fines is to keep materials in circulation. Therefore, a payment for overdue or lost items is required before other items may be charged out. Partial payment is permissible for charges over $25.00.  Arrangements for payment plan must be set up with the Library Director.

Books may be secured from Grayson County College or Denison Public Library through a courier service. Fill out a request at the Service Desk on the forms provided.

Interlibrary loan requests are submitted to reference. The loan period is set by the library lending the books.  See section on ILL lending for requirements.

Reserves may be placed on books in our catalog. Title requests will be accepted for books not in the collection.

Employees are required to check out materials in the same manner as the general public. They are responsible for paying fines when incurred before the card is used again.

Limitations may be placed on the number of items which may be checked out on a particular subject. Special arrangements may also be made with the Public Services Department if necessary for various programs and projects.

Loan periods are as follows:

Books 2 weeks
Filmstrips 2 weeks
Videocassettes/DVDs 3 days
Equipment 1 day
Audio Books 2 weeks
CDs 2 weeks

Three book depositories are available for returning books. One is on the south parking lot; one is attached to the building; and the other is located at the primary circulation desk. These depositories are designed only for books. The audiovisual depository is located by the entrance to the main area of the library.

Interlibrary Loan Borrowing

1.  Requests

A.  Any patron with a valid BARR card may request materials. The patron card must be current and have no fines or overdue materials. The card must have been issued for at least six weeks before requests will be accepted.  Patron must have a working phone number. Message phones are not acceptable.

B.  Requests for each item must be made on the appropriate ILL form and submitted to the Reference Desk. Requests by phone are accepted.

C.  The request form must be filled out legibly and as completely as possible. The patron information must be complete. Sufficient information to identify the item is required. The minimum information needed would be title, author, date and edition when applicable. When requesting photocopies of magazine articles, the name of periodical, volume number, issue number, title of article and page number(s) when applicable.

D.  No more than four requests per patron may be requested at one time.  It is the responsibility of the patron to bring in the subsequent titles when more than four titles are needed.

E.  A wide range of materials including books, articles from periodicals, software, DVD's, VHS and CD's may be requested. However, it may not always be possible to locate a particular item from a library that will lend it.  Materials that may be difficult to obtain include:

In the event that the item is only available from a library that charges, the patron will be notified to see if they are willing to pay for the service.

B.  A fine of .50 cents per day will be imposed for the late return of ILL materials. An additional charge may be added if item is returned to the book drop instead of the Reference Desk. Overdue items must be returned and all fines paid before another request will be processed. Repeated failure to abide by due dates for ILL's may result in the suspension of borrowing privileges.

C.  The cost for lost or damaged ILL material is determined by the lending library and is the responsibility of the patron who initiated the request. Charges generally include the price of the book plus a processing fee.
